Post Offices & Post Boxes

Free, practical consumer advice and information on Royal Mail post offices & post boxes for the citizens of Scotland

You can find postal collection times displayed on the post box itself. If your post box doesn’t have the information you are looking for or you are unable to access this before the next collection day, the table below outlines the general times, dependant on the location of the box.

Sometimes post boxes can change to an earlier collection time and will be collected when the postman / woman is out making their deliveries, usually in the morning.

You can find your local Royal Mail postal services and Post Office locations by entering your postcode and searching for your address at:

https://www.royalmail.com/services-near-you#/

Royal Mail sometimes have to relocate or remove post boxes under certain circumstances:

  • The post box will need to be removed if it has become a safety hazard, if it is no longer secure, or if it is damaged to the point where it cannot be used.
  • If building works or a dangerous level of traffic make it unsafe or impractical to access the Post Box, it will need to be relocated to a more suitable place.
  • The Post Box can also be removed and relocated if it is on private land and the owner requests it.

If Royal Mail does choose to relocate or remove a post box, three obligations must be maintained:

  1. A notice should be placed on the Post Box that states when and why it will be relocated or removed.
  2. Consultation should be made with the relevant organisations, including the local council, before proceeding with the removal or relocation.
  3. Any work involving relocation or repair must be done in reasonable time. Royal Mail expects most work to be done in 6 months.

A Post Office (PO) Box is a container that mail can be sent to instead of your home or office address.
You can use a Post Office (PO) Box to keep your address private, store mail when you can’t otherwise collect it from your property, collect business mail or keep mail private in shared accommodation. PO boxes are a Royal Mail service and application can be made at:
